You are likely familiar with the “Martha/Mary” story found in Luke 10:38-42, especially if you’re the “responsible older sister.”
Reflections on this passage are often presented as Martha versus Mary, a life of service versus a life of spiritual reflection, as if the two can be divided.
The word translated as “tasks” and “work” in verse 40 is the same word in Greek: diaconate. It’s “service.” Would anyone claim that the same Jesus, who just finished telling the story of the Good Samaritan and telling the lawyer to “go and do likewise” when reflecting on the mercy the Samaritan showed, would now believe the life of a disciple is best spent sitting at his feet rather than serving?
This is something to consider as we prepare for worship Sunday, and even more so as we continue our pursuit of faithful discipleship. Come to any of our meaningful services this Sunday and hear a message based on this familiar and helpful story from Jesus’ (and our) life.
See you Sunday.
