Love Never Ends.

On a day when our reflection should be on celebrating the good ministry of Josh and Alli Blackwelder, the unity in our community that is being fostered by Helping Florence Flourish and among our congregation as we help Dewey L. Carter School on Saturday through ServeFlo (click here for the TEAM registration page), and the service our children are providing in Mission Camp this week, we are instead, once again, despairing another atrocity.

As always, we find solace in the scripture. The word that I'm clinging to this morning is, "Love never ends" (1 Corinthians 13:8a).

Love never ends.

In a year that has included the massacre at Emanuel AME, Charleston, the Paris and Brussels attacks, and now Orlando?

Love never ends.

When hate speech and acts are what dominate news cycles?

Love never ends.

When people look for groups to blame rather than to help?

Love never ends.

How do I know? God is love (1 John 4:8) and, therefore, love cannot end. Prophecy, spiritual gifts, and knowledge are all limited in power and duration (1 Corinthians 13:8)—and those are good things. If God will bring those to an end, there can be no doubt that God will ultimately prevail over what is evil.

Love never ends because even as we are still taking in the horror of what happened early yesterday morning, people around the world are praying and showing support. Signs are prevalent that love is greater than hate. Children in Florence are uniting in serving OM Ships, Help4Kids, Briggs Elementary School, and the Presbyterian Home this week. There are 17 areas of ministry in Florence that ServeFlo (click here for the GENERAL registration page) will assist before June 26th.

Love never ends is the promise we have to cling to when hate gets all the attention and breaks our heart. We have no idea how God will work through us and our leaders to reduce and one day, we pray, prevent these kind of awful events, but with heavy hearts we continue to trust that God will and join God in that effort because we know that, it must be, love never ends.
