Sunday, May 18, 2008: Trinity Sunday
Scripture Lessons: II Corinthians 13:11-13; Matthew 28:16-20
Sermon: "Staying for the Benediction"
This Sunday we celebrate our heritage and recognize new fifty year members at both 9 and 11:15 AM. We currently have nine persons who have been members for 75 or more consecutive years! 119 more have been members for fifty years or more. This is a remarkable achievement when you consider all the things that can irritate or even inflame the passions of church members. Just ask Paul. His church in Corinth had any number of internal conflicts. He had to scold members, encourage members, and smooth over ruffled feathers. What the late Urban Holmes called the "thus-ness and so-ness" of the church can make the church a very difficult place to stay in. There is petty bickering, differences of biblical interpretation, and generational conflicts. But, for all its problems, we're all that God has. Every church needs to hear the benediction.
"Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you" (II Cor. 13:11).
